The collaboration between GRDC and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is rooted in the international community’s long-standing commitment to improving the availability and quality of hydrological data. Established in 1988, the GRDC supports WMO’s mission to promote the free and open exchange of meteorological and hydrological information.

River discharge data in the Global Runoff Database are primarily provided by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS). The mandate and international recognition of GRDC are supported by several resolutions of WMO. In carrying out its activities, the GRDC closely adheres to WMO guidelines, particularly with regard to data policy.
