General provisions on data processing
Scope of personal data processing
In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation and other applicable national data protection regulations, we process personal data of our users only to the extent necessary to provide a functional website, content and service. Personal data is only processed with the user’s consent, unless obtaining prior consent is not possible and data processing is permitted by law.
Legal basis for personal data processing
If the concerned person has given consent to the processing of their personal data within the scope of processing operations, article 6(1)(a) of the EU-General Data Protection Regulation provides the legal basis. If processing personal data is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party, article 6(1)(b) of the General Data Protection Regulation provides the legal basis. This also applies to processing steps which are necessary for implementing measures prior to entering into a contract. If processing personal data is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject, article 6(1)(c) of the General Data Protection Regulation provides the legal basis.
Data erasure and storage period
As soon as the storage purpose no longer applies, personal data will be deleted or blocked. It is possible to further store data if stipulated by European or national lawmakers through EU regulations, laws or other provisions to which we are subject. Data will also be deleted or blocked if a mandatory storage period, as required by the rules mentioned above, expires. Inquiries from the general public to the German Federal Institute of Hydrology, both in paper and electronic form, are stored in accordance with the statutory periods for retaining records set by the Registry Directive.

Data request contact form and contact via e-mail
A contact form on our data portal can be used to request data. If the user choses this option, the data entered into the form (mandatory: last name, first name, e-mail address, institution, working sector, country, address, subject matter, project title and abstract) will be transmitted to us and stored.
Alternatively, you can establish contact through the available e-mail address. In this case, the personal data transferred through your e-mail will be stored. If you contact us through our contact form or via e-mail, you consent to the processing of your personal data.
According to the GRDC data policy and user declaration, the data user agrees that the GRDC may inform the Members and other data providers of data about the use to which their data have been put and will transfer the names and addresses of the data users to Members and other data providers concerned.
Article 6(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation serves as a legal basis for processing data, if consent has been given by the user. You can withdraw your consent to the processing of your personal data at any time. In such a case, any correspondence that may have begun cannot be continued.
Right to access, correct, and erase data, right to object and other rights
You are entitled to ask us whether and which personal data we process. This concerns, among other, the purpose of the processing, the storage period, the scope and categories of processed data, and third-party data transfer. Furthermore, you are entitled to ask us whether personal data has been transmitted to a third country or an international organisation. If this is the case, you have the right to obtain information on appropriate safeguards in connection to the transfer.
Furthermore, you have the right to correct, erase, or restrict the processing of your personal data in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation. At any given time, you can object to the processing and revoke the declaration of consent under data protection law.
If you consider the processing of your personal data to violate the General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to complain to the relevant supervisory authority, which is the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI – www.bfdi.bund.de).
