Projects

Since its beginning, the GRDC is a key partner in a number of data collection and data management projects gearing towards the development and use of requirements-driven products on global scale.

The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment), and the International Science Council (ISC). It regularly assesses the status of global climate observations of the atmosphere, land and ocean and produces guidance for its improvement.

GCOS expert panels maintain definitions of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) which are required to systematically observe Earth`s changing climate. The observations supported by GCOS contribute to solving challenges in climate research and also underpin climate services and adaptation measures.

GRDC supports the ECV on River Discharge.

GEWEX

The Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) project, as part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), is dedicated to understanding Earth’s water cycle and energy fluxes at, and below the surface and in the atmosphere. We are a network of scientists gathering information on and researching the global water and energy cycles, which will help to predict changes in the world’s climate. The International GEWEX Project Office, or IGPO, supports these activities by planning meetings, implementing research goals, and producing a quarterly newsletter to keep the GEWEX community informed.
