Under the motto “From observation to climate action and sustainability for Earth”, ESA’s Living Planet Symposium was held last week in Vienna, Austria, from 23-27 June 2025. The conference takes place every three years and is the world’s largest conference on earth observation, climate and environmental protection and sustainability.
Simon Mischel from GRDC participated in the conference with three contributions in two sessions. The first session was the Agora Nexus session led by GCOS, to which GRDC belongs as a GCOS affiliated network. In a common presentation, GRDC and the University of Stuttgart presented the Global Terrestrial Network for Rivers (GTN-R) and the Remote Sensing-Based Extension of GRDC River Discharge Time Series. The presentation and discussion showcased how in-situ networks and Earth Observation data could compliment and benefit from each other.
The second session focused on monitoring river discharge variability in a context of climate change, bridging satellite technology, ground data and modelling. Simon contributed to the session as co-author in a talk of Cerbelaud et al., presenting their recent review paper, and with an overview poster about GRDC.
All contributions were very well received and the conference was a good opportunity to make and maintain contacts with colleagues from the remote sensing community.
